Career Mentoring & Financial Literacy

FINANCIAL LITERACY IS ONE OF THE BEST GIFTS YOU CAN GIVE TO YOUTH.

It has been a great year in the PEEP Financial Literacy Program. This year, we kicked off a pilot program for freshman at Phillip O. Berry Academy of Technology. With a quick lesson on budgeting, we put them right into the fire to see what would develop. On projects that allowed them to learn financial terminology, develop sound financial decision-making skills and of course a more in-depth look at budgeting for future investments such as home-buying, education, auto purchase and starting a business, these students came away with a better understanding of how managing your money can give you a sense of your own power, which in turn helps our community prosper. All dressed up for the occasion, students put on their best presentations. All are winners!

A career mentor who spends one hour in a classroom with 17-25 students can sometimes teach more to students about success than they might learn in a month. Career Mentors:

  • WANT TO BE PRESENT.
  • Give Students REAL INSIGHT into their professional (and sometimes personal) lives.
  • DO NOT SUGARCOAT obstacles and their own failures.
  • UPLIFT students.
  • Provide students with a ROLE MODEL.
